Maremma: the Perfect Van Life Getaway for Couples

A JOURNEY THROUGH ART, NATURE AND ANCIENT VILLAGES

The perfect bridge to begin to appreciate the thousand faces of the Grosseto Maremma, in this article we will take you on a discovery of some of Tuscany’s most beautiful and unknown villages, visit a lost Etruscan city, a contemporary art installation in the middle of a vineyard, and end on a high note with a ride by the sea.

MANCIANO, a postcard landscape

About 70 km south of La Pampa camper stop area we find Manciano, a delightful village perched on a hill located halfway between the sea and the mountains, at the top of the village stands the Aldobrandesque fortress that serves as a lookout dominating the entire surrounding panorama. The village’s location gives its visitors a privileged view of the entire Maremma, passing from Mount Amiata to the Argentario sea.
The elegantly preserved village is a veritable labyrinth of steep streets, noteworthy are the small Piazza Magenta, the Castle and the renovated Museum of Prehistory and Protohistory with multimedia tours.

You can park on Martiri della Libertà Street, near the village cemetery.

Where to eat:
Restaurant enoteca La Filanda: the recommended by the Michelin guide, located within the ancient city walls the restaurant offers a refined interpretation of typical Maremma cuisine, in summer you can dine on the beautiful terrace.

HYPERMAREMMA a festival of contemporary art in the open air

A few kilometers from Manciano on the way back to Grosseto, it is possible to visit one of the permanent installations of the contemporary art project called Hypermaremma. The cultural project created to promote Maremma through artistic interventions, temporary installations, events and collaborations that enhance the unique landscape of this region. The initiative aims to unite art, nature and tradition, involving internationally renowned artists and local communities to transform the area into a creative and sustainable laboratory.

Artist Emiliano Maggi’s work entitled: Venus Anadyomene, stands like a fairy-tale ruin in the heart of the vineyards of the Terenzi winery.

MAGLIANO a village with an ancient past

The first settlements around Magliano in Tuscany are traced back to the 6th century BC. Stroll along the impressive medieval walls, visit the Church of St. John the Baptist and admire the Ulivo della Strega, one of the oldest olive trees in Italy.
The town is surrounded by archaeological sites and necropolis that tell of a very ancient past, from the Iron Age to the Roman Empire; among the best-known necropolis is that of Heba, with chamber tombs dug into the rock, and the Sepulchre of San Bruzio, located near the abbey of the same name.

Near the center of town and the town wall is a quiet mixed parking lot with cars.

Ristorante Da Sandra:If you pass through Magliano it is definitely worth a visit, try the tortelli stuffed with truffled patte.

ROSELLE the lost city

Roselle Archaeological Park, located on the outskirts of Grosseto, is 25 km from La Pampa rest area. Roselle was one of the most influential Etruscan cities and preserves significant remains such as the cyclopean walls, Roman amphitheater, forum and private homes with mosaics.

Ride into the sunset on the dunes of the SAN FELICE OASIS.

The San Felice WWF Oasis is a protected area that protects a unique environment of hills, Mediterranean scrub and wetlands. The oasis is home to a rich biodiversity, with migratory bird species, amphibians, reptiles and distinctive flora. It is an ideal place for hiking, birdwatching and walking in unspoiled nature. The area is an important refuge for local wildlife and contributes to the conservation of ecosystems typical of the Tuscan Maremma.

The park begins literally at the side of the La Pampa rest area. By riding to the intent of the maritime pine forest you will reach the sea and if you are lucky you will enjoy a unique sunset!
