Scansano between Via Clodia and Ghiaccio Forte
Length: 60 km

From the Etruscans of Ghiaccio Forte to the 14th-century castles of Montepò and Cotone, from the cinnabar mines of Cerreto Piano to the crops and pastures of the Pomonte farm. On the crossroads of the ancient customs beaten by transhumant shepherds at the height of Murci, just below the large blades of the Poggi Alti wind farm, there are traces of one of the most mysterious consular roads: the Via Clodia. The use of a GPS is essential; the route requires a fair amount of training and the use of mountain or gravel bikes in excellent condition.

Discovering the Etruscan trails, Poggio Buco and the megalithic temple of Poggio Rota

Poggio Buco and Poggio Rota, two extraordinary archaeological sites brought together in a bicycle touring route that straddles the middle valley of the Fiora River, between Manciano, Sorano and Pitigliano. Where the river, in its rush toward the sea, carves its bed in the friable tuffaceous rock, man has left traces of his passage since the dawn of civilization.

Vetulonia and the street of sepulchres

The route passes through Grosseto, between Via della Repubblica, Via Giotto and Via Cimabue. Travels along low-traffic country roads and reaches the limits of the Diaccia Botrona Nature Area. Leaving the plains, the route climbs the hill of Vetulonia to the excavations of the ancient Etruscan-Roman settlement, the impressive tombs and the archaeological museum.

The itinerary, all on flat land, passes among the reclaimed lands conquered by the swamp at the end of the 1700s. Framing this great route are the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve with Clodia Island, which can be visited with a small detour, the Ximenes Red House Museum, the Grand Ducal pine forest, the San Felice Oasis, the Marina di Grosseto waterfront and Castiglione della Pescaia, an ancient fishing village enclosed within walls dating back to the 10th century, where the imposing Aragonese Fortress stands out.
